		<description>Hello!

This is my world of creation and thought processes for design and managing projects. It helps to organise my thoughts and keep me on track as a designer and a project manager.&#38;nbsp;


A little bout’ myself.


I graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic- (Dip) Product Design &#38;amp; Innovation. I learnt about model making, computed 3d forms, material properties and manufacturability. My favourite part was to realise my sketch into products, working with various materials and tools at the workshop.I furthered my studies in LASALLE College of the Art- BA (Hons) Design Communication. I enjoy illustrating while in search for my taste in aesthetics. In school, I learnt about the fundamentals of layout and applied those theories in projects. We deconstruct graphics and observed in its details- to talk about negative spaces, scale and depth. Moving into interior design, I mashed my skillsets and look at it from a 2d &#38;amp; 3d perspectives.&#38;nbsp;It involves designing, technical knowledge, project coordination and managing stakeholders. As a product and graphic designer, I am confident to value-add into the industry, to create new spaces and experiences!

S &#38;amp; A
Project: The Topiary


Moving into a new resale apartment, homeowners S&#38;amp;A plans to revamp the home for their lovely three children. They have an eye for fluted panels and feel that the industrial design style is “very last year”.


Last renovated five years ago, the previous homeowner has quite an eccentric taste. Their chose on canopies instead of bed frames. Some areas have too much uneccessary lightings. Every angle feels too jarring to look at.

	Clear the mess!

	
The backsplash is quite confusing to look at; it is vibrant in color yet the ornaments look old fashioned. Our strategy is to retain some furnitures, to modify them as new features in the design. We planned for more soft pastel colours to neutralise the heavy tones. In other words, we attempt to redesign the home by rectifying the heavy components so that the space looks holistic again. 


Overlay tiles
Initially, we planned to overlay wall and floor tiles for both bathrooms. However, homeowners dislike the idea of entrance curbs and wanted the external flooring to be leveled with the bathroom's floor tiles. We concluded the best way is to hack/redo the floor tiles. In this situation, MSCT requires to coat waterproofing under the tiles.  The bottom portion of the wall (highlighted in yellow) is needed to coat for the "upturn”. In other words, it has to be hacked and a new set of tiles will be laid over again. For the other walls, there is no issue as the overlaying tiles will cover it up.

We decided not the overlay walls tiles at the shower area, retaining its existing tiles look.

Reason being it is difficult to level them evenly; one off-angled tile can cause the rest to be slanted.

This is a hacked off tile, we have to find a tile closest in color, texture and size. Handed this piece over to the homeowner to source for the tile design.

I sourced for the other tiles to match when homeowner’s busy. This tile was to match the kerb for the yard’s bathroom. 


Terrazzos &#38;amp; Repetitions
We decided on a few tiles at Hafary, we picked on a modern and luxurious look.

The Terrazzo tiles plays a key role in the children’s bathroom. It aims to portray fun and energy, yet still keeping it within the styling

Some graphic hints for the selection of tiles. The repeated triangle and square tiles are backed by dark grey grouting so that the shapes will be identifiable.

These are the renderings proposed, our initial plans were to keep the spaces warm and cosy, more of wood touches and less of solid colors.However, the homeowner prefers something “cooler”, with the inclusion of grey laminates, attempt for a clean and modern look. We added in a few closed up views to pitch for the fluted panels storeroom which suited the theme as well. We’re glad that these renders pulled through and our client loved the design. We switched out some of the laminates and some structures. We have a photoshoot and here are how the photos turned out.

Kingston Terrace is a freehold condominium built 25 years ago. its structures are old and this renovation project requires more attention to details. It is a condominium with childcare and tuition centres on its ground level. Renovation noise disturbance will be an issue because it affects their business activities. The children have to take their afternoon nap from 1-3pm. Therefore this timing is voided for renovation and I have to make sure my contractors are well informed.

High we go!

My client hoped for a high ceiling and a large living room. Condominiums have false ceilings as a standard practice whereby our only hope is to have it removed. However, as easy as it sounds, there are many considerations taken. 

These are a few things we have to make sure before we decide to initiate the hacking phase.

I was scratching my head in thoughts of what lies internally. I thought of requesting archival from Kingston’s MCST. However, apparently there is no such thing. Our only hope was to wait for the hackers to do their magic. They popped a few holes at the corners of the false ceiling. I peeked in and fortunately it looks okay. It is bare and it requires screed and plastering works, not too much of a complication.

 With a high ceiling, the interior holds the opportunity of looking spacious and allows the furnitures and lighting fixtures to stand out. I needed something different, a little more striking and still within the budget. On the other hand, I was kinda too sick with the neutral color palettes; everyone’s selecting them. So we decided with a deep terracotta color paint that spans from the dining wall to the kitchen.&#38;nbsp;This color will will go in accordance with the furnitures and decor.

	Selleys - caulk

Sometimes this happens. Who knew what’s behind the grills after removing it? The gap’s about 10mm in thickness. We have engaged the handyman to settle this issue. He reccommended to use Chaulk for walls that are on the external facade. This filler protects the interior in any case that the rain seeps through.

	Patching up Vinyl
To save cost and unneccessary expenditure, we are retaining the existing vinyl and skirting. However, as we are opening up spaces and breaking down some of the walls, there are some areas that requires patching up with vinyl floorings. The tricky part is that we can only patch up with the same design as the existing flooring. We will have to select from the same supplier; as the clicking mechanism has to match.On the other hand, the skirting profile has to be the same profile. I took existing skirting and brought it over to the supplier so that it matches. Meanwhile, the tiler has cement screed over and levelled the ground evenly to lay the vinyl. To save cost, certain areas are separated with aluminium trimmings.

	What style though?
On my first impression, I felt homeowner was going for a very feminine style for her apartment. The only thing she knows is that she wanted a terrazzo looking bathroom. Base on these few pointers, I proposed a pink wall paint and terrazzo wall tiles in the bathroom. For the kitchen cabinets, we settled for something less striking and still contains a tint of purple-ish tone in it.

	Modern Desert Theme

We decided on a “modern desert” theme at the end. It steers away from the feminine look. The theme was selected to match the terracotta colors and also to have a “safe /widespread look”, catered for her guest. A more rough or slight brutal look. Hafary has a tile that has an rough concrete look and still has the patches of terrazzos in it. We couldn’t be more proud of our selection, the tile completes beautifully with the terracotta EDL laminate in the common bathroom. With the theme, the open shelf was swapped out to solid wood. The planks were professionally installed by Timber Actually. Our carpenter assisted with the LED cut out slot too.&#38;nbsp;

	I did some DIY parts at site. All of the existing window handles were rusty and loose. Being very careful with the dimensions, I purchased new ones on shoppee and replaced on my own.


	This is a housewarming gift to homeowner. I had some spare woods to work on with. It is a candle stand in three different heights. They were nailed and glued, then finished with a varnish coat.&#38;nbsp;

This is how everything turns out! We spent the morning - afternoon for the&#38;nbsp; photoshoot. Some areas were selected and dimmed on low light, in hopes to achieve the warmth and homely feeling.

Simplicity at its best
They sought for a warm, cosy, “handcrafted” home. It doesn’t has to be all wooden-like or has to follow a certain style. The essence of their design is about having a communal space for friends and family to feel safe at home. In other words, to live simple and to avoid luxury, to appreciate the little things in life.

More importantly, the home has to look lively, some splash of colours will help to elevate the mood! The living room wall is painted green, and common bathroom is colored in blue. Preparation is critical in this project. We kept consistant with the chosen colors.  The blue tiles has to follow closely with the vanity laminate, while the green paint color has to be near identical to the kitchen’s laminate.

These visuals were rendered for pitch to the homeowner. The bathroom renders were created by our in-house drafters. They suggested to demolish half of the wall and replace it with a glass panel. A sub-open concept kitchen and the homeowner will be able to check out their guests when they are busy cooking. That is also why we extended the wall for a L-shaped cabinetry.


Electrical casings, trunkings and cornicesOn my site visit, I discovered that old HDBs have crazy amount of electrical casings. Same goes for the network cabling and air con trunkings. For this project,&#38;nbsp; there were cornices at the borders of the ceiling. As the main understanding is to keep the home minimal, the cornices were removed.

This is an image of before &#38;amp; after hacking. The dismantled casings and cornices affects the wall. We can’t paint it over directly as we will still be able to see the bump. These has to be plastered smooth.

For hacked wall tiles, note that these tiny little holes will get you into trouble. They are actually punched into the water pipes, each tiny hole is a leakage. Therefore, we have to change out all of the pipes.&#38;nbsp;

The plan was to clear out everything in the bedroom and separate into three areas; study, tv area and sleep. To achieve that, we require an L-shaped partition. Our options are either gypsum board (a cheaper alternative) or to work with carpentry. The homeowner shared that she likes the aesthetics of wood panelling instead. Locally, our carpenters uses plywood and laminates for a more cost effective renovation. To produce the wood panelling look, our practice is to carve out groove lines to mimic the design. Unlike the authentic Wainscotting, the method uses solid wood and nails as shown in the diagram.

	&#38;gt; What’s going on within our eyes?
Frames, v-grooves or panelling that has vertical or horizontal lines coincides with the axis’ in the space. That is why we feel more comfortable when we look at things that are straight and not slanted. These dividers or v-grooves gets louder with its repetitive look. The more lines, the more intriguing it feels. However, there is also a limit in our visuals, too many lines can be revoking. In my opninon, materials such as fluted glass cannot be use for large areas.&#38;nbsp;

	On our first attempt, we tried to combine pastel pink painted walls with saturated laminates and white cabinets. Homeowner, homeowner mentioned that it looked messy and confusing, she didn’t liked the “x”s for the wardrobes as well.

Moving forward, we decided to go with a white-on-white look. Taking inspiration from the victorian style, we proposed shaker cabinets (not at full height intentionally), glass frames and some fluted book cabinets. The shaker cabinets includes square glass doors, to keep in consistent with half height frame &#38;amp; glass.

When I met S &#38;amp; A, they knew exactly what they wanted for their home. The styling &#38;amp; concept were laid out clearly in details. The only part missing was the renovation’s process. They were cluesless if their visions were practical. Timeline was kind of tight as well, they were rushing to move in to save cost on rental.&#38;nbsp;

When I asked for a style, S &#38;amp; A talked about it so naturally as though they were already living in it. From materials to decor selections, the colors and structures tell of a greyscaled styling. Some may call it brutalism or monochromatic, but it didnt matter as i’m able to vibe with them.


Jack of all trades
When homeowner shared with me that his budget is at 30k, to be honest, I was quite worried. A resale maisonette condo with some major works done, definitely will reach to about 50 &#38;amp; above. Turned out homeowner is quite a handyman himself. He dismantled the floor skirtings and toilet bowls all by himeself. He fixed up his study table, did the paint job and replaced louvered bathroom doors from taobao. In other words, most of the renovation cost goes to carpentry for the kitchen and bathrooms.&#38;nbsp;

In fact, the homeowner has other plans ready. He was prepared to do microcement on his kitchen backsplash and bathrooms. We engaged a supplier, Aftertouchworks, they are experts in microcement techniques and processes. Initially, I was quite skeptical when homeowner arranged the meet up at a dilapidated industrial building. Nevertheless, we made our way to their hideout. We were welcomed with drinks and we sat down at the counter as though we were customers served by a bartender. Basyir is the chemist, instead of cocktails, he made color sample palettes. We are able to customise the look, to tune it slightly brighter/darker, add on certain accent colors, or create an effect (probably cloud or bristles). Meanwhile, Basyir takes note of the colors adjusted so that he’s able to track back and acheive the same exact look.&#38;nbsp;

Additional works
The design strategy is straight forwardly keeping clean &#38;amp; practical. As we know that greyscale is the go-to color, our instructions are clearly to simply everything. Anything that has repetitive lines or odd looking rough textures, we will overlay it clean. Or any striking colors that disrupts the b&#38;amp;w look, we will switch them out. We microcemented the entire bathroom wall &#38;amp; floor to cover up the nasty looking tiles. The red nylon ropes lightbulbs are painted up black too. There are many areas that homeowner &#38;amp; I diy’d, inclusive of patching up wall holes and some of the paint jobs. We even dismantled the water closets and mixers.

C &#38;amp; CAddress: 102A Bidadari Park Drive


This is a newly built BTO 4 room apartment (ground level) in Bidadari. The homeowner opt in for no floorings and an open concept kitchen. However, the peculiar thing about this layout is that the kitchen still feels enclosed. A wall is blocking from the side and there’s a water point behind it. In other words, HDB “forcefully” encourages the sink at the spot, to have a parallel kitchen cabinet on both sides.

Open-concept
The homeowner didnt like the idea of a sub-open concept kitchen. It will look half-hearted and as though the works are not planned well. Therefore, we decided to knock down the small wall and repipe the water to the opposite side. The only disadvantage is that the kitchen storage space is limited. The homeowner isn’t disheartened, instead he found ways to resolve the constraints. He purchased standing dish racks and small metal drawers to hide behind the fridge. We built in suspended racks in the service yard for additional space too.

Home Gardening
Moving into his first home, the homeowner explores into nature. He read up online to search for easy maintenance plants. Those that can survive in low light conditions and doesn’t wither very easily. Staying at the ground level gives the homeowner an opportunity to have his own mini garden. He shared that gardening it isn’t always rainbows and butterflies. However, his proudest possession is his Alocasia. It started from a single leaf and now it has grew and multiplied to 3.&#38;nbsp;

Big Foot vinyl
The vinyl were personally purchased and installed by the homeowner. Big Foot is made in Korea, it is eco-friendly and made from non-toxic plasticiser. Overall, the selected maple color is on point and it is comfortable to walk on. The joints feel sturdy and it doesn’t have an odour that some vinyls tend to have.

The bathrooms are kept minimal, retaining hdb tiles, we only included a fixed panel showerscreen and switch out the box-up covers to frosted acrylics.&#38;nbsp;


	To Design &#38;amp; Render
The homeowner isn’t much particular on the overall look of the home but he wished for a home that feels different and simple at the same time. He wanted a peranakan + modern home as it reminds of his childhood. His parents also stayed at the ground floor where he has friends frequently visits for a game of soccer. 
“It isn’t about me but the society that we lived in, these are my favourite memories and I believed my wife agrees on that.”&#38;nbsp;
We chose for grey floor tiles and black finishes fittings for its versatility. The homeowner is kinda mysterious, so it added as a bonus to his personality. Moreover, being on the “dark side” gives a modern and cool vibe to the home.&#38;nbsp;

Spearheading with this concept, I decided to include Louis Poulsen modern lights in the renders. The backsplash displays the iconic Peranakan aesthetic, complimenting it with a laminated dark walnut cabinet. Rattans, plants and ceramics are decors placed on purpose so that the Peranakan look is consistent throughtout the apartment, it harmonizes well with the backsplash too.&#38;nbsp;

Homeowner reached out to me for a discussion at The Shelford condominium. She shared about her furnitures and decoratives historical origins. Mostly dated back to the old China dynasty, the homeowner’s husband is a collector. He has antiques; ie emperor’s robe, old chinese cabinets and old wall lamps.&#38;nbsp;
The homeowner decided to “live better”, to steer away from the old designs, she wanted to declutter the home and modernise certain aspects of the home. We planned to include more of western’s stylings to diffuse the heavy oriental ornaments. She added that she loves the idea of a tropical look, giving sort of a character to the home. She mentioned that she doesn’t have “green fingers” but she likes the naturalistic look of it.

	Moving forward, we made selection from Hafary tiles. We chose a large tile feature based a tropical look; I was so intrigued by the looks and felt that we certainly made a right decision. We accompanied that feature tile with grey concrete look so that the bathroom doesn’t look too busy. Here’s how it turned out!


	However, homeowner backed out with the initial plan. It was decided to move into a heavy graphical look. The selection steered away from the tropical idea and dived into heavy repetitions. The tiles selected mostly are pattern tiles, feels almost like a turkish bathouse. Note that there are other designs principles that we can play on; Symmetry, contrast, negative spaces are examples we can work on. Relying too much on repetition will produce a heavy graphical look. It’s feels like being in a mirror house and it tires the eye over time.

	The repeated tiles misleads your visioon its focal point isn’t strong. With repetitions, decorative elements, the space will look cluttered and tight. Maximalist might be an outcome, however I feel it might contridict the owner’s direction.&#38;nbsp;As IDs we could only persuade our, ultimately it is still to the homeonwer’s likings, to their decisions.

	Looking back at the old pictures, I felt nothing much has changed for the design. It only feels new because there are new furnitures and fittings installed. The home still feels cluttered. Small spaces such as the yard now feels even smaller with the new tabletop protruding outwards. I hope I’m able to reccommend homeowners better in future. Minimal materials selection doesn’t mean weak design. A design concept has to be intentional, less is always more.

My most enjoyable part of this project will be the vinyl decal. We found a supplier who does mural decal on glass. The decal was printed and cut out based on my design. So we had this tropical leaves in bronze color. Not only the mirror was used as a reflection, the decal acts like a backdrop to the area. As we installed a downlight right above the decal, it projects shadows to the surrounding walls. Being in a tightly knitted space, that walkway corridor feels like an immersive walkthrough. Somewhat like you experience from retail interiors.At that moment I was like “woah.. I could actualy do this..” I hope I’ll be given more opportunities to experiment on this. Definitely it is a money well spent.

Commonwealth crescent is a small and quiet estate with mostly elders residing in the area. The location is famous of its food; 2 Chefs started in a small corner and now it is famous for the tze char, my favourites are the butter pork ribs &#38;amp; ginseng chicken. Eng Kee chicken wing is another hawker stall that has long queues during lunch hours.&#38;nbsp;
Homeowner shared with me that the apartment was brought down from her grandmother, therefore the space has much sentimental value to her. As a young girl, she often meet up with her grandma and hang around in the estate. She can easily identify the estate’s best coffee or tastiest sliced fish soup.&#38;nbsp;
Moving into the unit, G.L hoped for a newly renovated look but still able to retain certain memories of the space. Looking at the unit, we found two distinct materials that can be identified easily from her grandma’s. Firstly, the terrazzo flooring are too precious to be hacked away and replaced, it may look dirty but it is still able to be grind and polished. Secondly, the kitchen wall tiles has its distinct peranakan look, the downside is its vibrant green color, it’s difficult to match with any color.

	To Design &#38;amp; PlanHomeowner likes solid colors to blend together with black paint work or powdercoated fittings. The colors has to suit the terrazzos colors, and it shouldnt be too loud. We decided to go for EDL’s matcha, it has a soothing vibe, feels almost naturalistic.&#38;nbsp;

On the other hand, the kitchen requires a careful plan on its layout and configuration. It is a small space to include the laundry area. We needed to fit in a washing machine, dryer and hanging clothes rack. As floorplan are not always drawn to the exact scale, the space will differs slightly larger or smaller. Therefore it is difficult to gauge without going down to site for actual measurements. Below shows the renders based on the floorplan’s measurement. Sometimes on image it feels fitting but on actual ground it might not be feasible.

	Tapes &#38;amp; Markings
Based on the plans I shared with homeowner. I have a look to look at the space more acurrately. On the left hand side photo was the initial plan that we wanted to have the washing machine and basin right outside the bathroom. But looking at the yellow tapes, I felt the space is very small, there’s a tendancy that homeowner will bump into the corner in future. On the right photo, the diagonal line shows the in between space of the cabinets, in a range of 800-1000mm will be practical.

	To Hack &#38;amp; Dismantle
On commencement day, our hackers took out the wall &#38;amp; floor tiles in the kitchen, hacked out a new opening for the toilet and brought up the new tiles / materials. Hackers help to lay the floor protection as well. Certain things like fans are not to be disposed of, they are all kept safely in the common bedroom.

Tilings up!
We have retained some of the old tiles that was from my homeowner’s grandma. The bathroom shows the new tiles and the window’s opening are nicely cemented smooth. Next will be installing the window there!

Moving forward, carpentry &#38;amp; tabletop are installed. The paintings are done on two coats. The image below shows the first coat. More importantly look at how the terrazzos shine after polished! It looks as clean as new. The only thing is that the skirting can’t be polished. The huge polishing machine aren’t able to clamp down the sides to grind and polish. At most the skirting can only be cleaned and touch up on the cracks.&#38;nbsp;
