This portfolio reflects how I think, design and deliver projects. It brings together my creative process, technical development and on-site experience, while helping me organise ideas and continuously improve as both a designer and project manager. A little bout’ myself. My design journey began at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, where I studied Product Design &amp; Innovation. I developed a strong foundation in model making, three-dimensional form, material properties and manufacturability. What I enjoyed most was transforming an initial sketch into a physical product through hands-on experimentation with different materials and fabrication methods. I later pursued a BA (Hons) in Design Communication at LASALLE College of the Arts, where I developed my visual sensitivity and explored my own design language. Through illustration, typography and layout, I learnt to examine details such as negative space, scale, hierarchy and depth—and understand how they influence the way people experience visual communication. Today, I bring these 2D and 3D perspectives into retail design and visual merchandising. In my current role, I manage travel-retail projects for beauty and luxury brands across Singapore and Malaysia, covering visual adaptation, technical coordination, production, airport permits, installation and on-site execution. My multidisciplinary background allows me to understand both creative intent and practical delivery. They were drawn to fluted detailing and softer contemporary finishes, while preferring to move away from the industrial aesthetic that had become increasingly common. Although the apartment had been renovated only five years earlier, its existing design featured several visually dominant elements. Rather than replacing everything, our strategy was to identify furniture and built-in elements that could be retained, modified and incorporated into the new design. A softer pastel palette was introduced to balance the heavier existing tones and create a calmer environment for the family. The objective was not simply to remove the previous design, but to selectively refine its strongest elements. However, the homeowners did not want raised entrance kerbs and preferred a more level transition between the external flooring and the bathroom floor. After reviewing the site conditions, we concluded that the existing floor tiles would need to be removed and replaced. As the floor was being hacked, the MCST required a new waterproofing system beneath the tiles. The waterproofing also needed to extend upwards along the lower portion of the surrounding walls to form the required upturn. This meant that the lower wall tiles had to be removed before the waterproofing and replacement tiles could be installed. The remaining wall surfaces could be overlaid, reducing the extent of demolition while still achieving a consistent finish. After reviewing the concept, however, the homeowners expressed a preference for a cooler and more contemporary atmosphere. In response, we introduced grey laminates and refined the material palette to create a cleaner, more modern appearance. We also prepared several close-up renderings to communicate the finer details of the proposal, particularly the fluted-panel feature concealing the storeroom entrance. The visualisations helped the homeowners understand how the colours, materials and architectural details would work together within the completed space. They responded positively to the overall direction, giving us a strong foundation from which to develop the final design. Before fabrication, selected laminates and structural details were adjusted to suit the homeowners’ preferences and the actual site conditions. The completed home remained closely aligned with the original renderings while incorporating the practical refinements made during implementation. Rather than removing all ornamentation, the design introduces details selectively so that every element feels intentional. The full-height wardrobe maximises storage while blending quietly into the surrounding wall. Its soft grey finish keeps the cabinetry visually light, while the subtle framed panels give the doors depth without making them appear overly decorative. Slim brass handles and matching drawer knobs add a refined accent and gently lift the otherwise neutral composition. Storage was arranged through a combination of tall wardrobe compartments and lower drawers, allowing frequently used items to remain organised and easily accessible. The warm timber flooring and adjacent timber door soften the cool grey cabinetry, giving the room a comfortable and balanced character. Given the age of the development, the renovation required closer inspection, careful planning and greater attention to the existing site conditions. The project also presented an operational challenge. Childcare and tuition centres occupy the ground floor, which meant that renovation noise could disrupt their daily activities. In particular, noisy works had to stop between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm to accommodate the children’s afternoon rest period. I incorporated this restriction into the project schedule and communicated it clearly to every contractor involved. Noisy activities were planned outside the restricted hours, while quieter tasks continued where possible. Rather than using terracotta as a single feature colour, its earthy character was carried throughout the home to create a calm, inviting and cohesive atmosphere. This warmth also complements the homeowner’s creative personality. As someone who enjoys origami, she handcrafted a lampshade using folded paper. When illuminated, the paper gently diffuses the warm light, while its geometric folds create subtle variations of light and shadow. More than a decorative feature, the lampshade brings a personal story into the space. Its handmade quality adds softness and individuality to the interior, balancing the practical elements of the home with a sense of creativity and craft. Together with the terracotta palette, it helps create an environment that feels warm, expressive and distinctly hers. Opening Up the Ceiling The homeowner wanted a generous living area with a greater sense of height and openness. As condominiums commonly conceal services above false ceilings, removing the existing ceiling presented an opportunity to reveal the unit’s original ceiling height. However, the decision was not as straightforward as simply removing it. Before proceeding with demolition, several concealed conditions had to be considered: Whether exposed pipes or services would remain visibleWhether the existing air-conditioning ducts could be removed or reroutedWhether structural beams would interrupt the ceiling profileWhether the exposed slab would require extensive rectification As the building was approximately 25 years old, I approached the MCST to enquire about the original drawings. Unfortunately, no relevant records were available, leaving us without a clear picture of what was concealed above the ceiling. To manage the uncertainty, the demolition team created several small inspection openings at selected corners. This allowed us to examine the space before committing to the full removal. Fortunately, there were no major obstructions. The exposed surface was generally bare and required only screeding, plastering and finishing works. Removing the false ceiling immediately gave the living and dining areas a stronger sense of volume. The additional height made the home feel more spacious and created a better backdrop for the furniture and lighting features. Color Splashes With the architecture opened up, I wanted to introduce a colour that felt distinctive while remaining warm and liveable. Instead of following the neutral palettes commonly seen in contemporary homes, we selected a deep terracotta tone extending from the dining wall into the kitchen. The continuous colour visually connects both areas and gives the home a stronger identity. Its earthy warmth complements the homeowner’s furniture, décor and handmade origami lampshade, while creating a striking contrast against the open ceiling and surrounding finishes. Her clearest preference was for a terrazzo-inspired bathroom. Using this as a starting point, I proposed a combination of muted pink walls and terrazzo-patterned bathroom tiles. For the kitchen cabinetry, we selected a more understated finish with a subtle mauve undertone. This kept the interior cohesive without making the colours feel overly strong or thematic. As the design developed, we eventually defined the concept as A Terracotta Palette.The style allowed us to balance the softer colour choices with warmer earth tones, natural materials and slightly raw textures. It also created a more versatile and welcoming environment for both the homeowner and her guests. At Hafary, we found a tile that brought these ideas together. It featured a textured, concrete-like base with scattered terrazzo fragments, giving it a slightly rugged character while retaining the visual detail the homeowner wanted. In the common bathroom, the tile paired beautifully with the terracotta laminate, creating a warm and cohesive composition. To strengthen the natural quality of the concept, the original open shelving was replaced with solid timber planks, professionally installed by Timber Actually. Our carpenter also coordinated the recessed slot for the integrated LED lighting. Each piece was assembled using nails and wood adhesive before being finished with a protective varnish. The different heights created a simple sculptural composition, while the natural wood complemented the warm materials used throughout the home. It doesn’t has to be all wooden-like or has to follow a certain style. The essence of their design is about having a communal space for friends and family to feel safe at home. In other words, to live simple and to avoid luxury, to appreciate the little things in life. More importantly, the home has to look lively, some splash of colours will help to elevate the mood! The living room wall is painted green, and common bathroom is colored in blue. Preparation is critical in this project. We kept consistant with the chosen colors. The bathroom renders were created by our in-house drafters. They suggested to demolish half of the wall and replace it with a glass panel. A sub-open concept kitchen and the homeowner will be able to check out their guests when they are busy cooking. That is also why we extended the wall for a L-shaped cabinetry. Electrical casings, trunkings and cornicesOn my site visit, I discovered that old HDBs have crazy amount of electrical casings. Same goes for the network cabling and air con trunkings. For this project,&nbsp; there were cornices at the borders of the ceiling. To achieve that, we require an L-shaped partition. Our options are either gypsum board (a cheaper alternative) or to work with carpentry. The homeowner shared that she likes the aesthetics of wood panelling instead. Locally, our carpenters uses plywood and laminates for a more cost effective renovation. To produce the wood panelling look, our practice is to carve out groove lines to mimic the design. My role was to evaluate the feasibility of their ideas, coordinate the renovation process and keep the project progressing towards their intended move-in date. Greyscale - A Shared Design Language When I asked S &amp; A about their preferred style, they described it so naturally that it felt as though they were already living in the space. From the material finishes to the décor, their choices formed a cohesive greyscale palette defined by raw textures, clean structures and understated details. Some might describe the style as brutalist or monochromatic, but the label was less important than understanding the atmosphere they wanted to create. I connected with their vision immediately and worked with them to translate it into a practical and cohesive home. A JACK OF ALL TRADES - When the homeowners shared their renovation budget of S$30,000, I was initially concerned. With a resale maisonette and several major works required, a typical renovation could easily exceed S$50,000. However, the homeowner was highly resourceful and comfortable with hands-on work. He removed the existing floor skirtings and toilet bowls, assembled his own study table, completed the painting and installed louvred bathroom doors sourced online. By dividing the work thoughtfully and prioritising the budget, we were able to direct most of the renovation cost towards the kitchen and bathroom carpentry. To explore its feasibility, we engaged Aftertouchworks, a specialist in microcement application and finishing techniques. I was initially unsure of what to expect when our meeting was arranged at an unassuming industrial building. However, stepping into their workshop revealed an intimate and highly creative material laboratory. We were welcomed with drinks and invited to sit at the counter while Basyir guided us through the customisation process. Working almost like a material chemist, he prepared colour samples and adjusted each mixture according to our feedback. We explored variations in brightness, accent tones and surface effects, including cloud-like movement and visible brush textures. Every adjustment was carefully documented, allowing the selected finish to be accurately reproduced during application. With greyscale established as the core palette, each decision focused on simplifying the space and removing details that distracted from the overall concept. Surfaces with repetitive lines or uneven textures were covered with cleaner finishes, while strongly coloured elements that disrupted the monochromatic palette were replaced or refinished. In the bathrooms, microcement was applied across the existing walls and floors, concealing the dated tiles and creating a more seamless, contemporary appearance. Even smaller details were considered—the red nylon cords on the pendant lights were painted black to blend naturally into the space. The homeowner and I also completed several elements ourselves to manage the budget and maintain progress. This included patching wall openings, carrying out selected painting works, and dismantling the existing water closets and mixers before the new works began. While some of these interventions were relatively small, together they strengthened the overall visual language of the home. Here is the final outcome. Although the completed home appears simple and effortless, a great deal of planning, coordination and decision-making took place behind the scenes. Every material, finish and detail was considered carefully—from the customised microcement surfaces and carpentry to the homeowners’ own hands-on contributions. Throughout the project, we worked towards one consistent objective: to keep the space clean, restrained and visually cohesive. This meant controlling the colour palette, balancing different textures and ensuring that every element complemented the home’s greyscale identity without making it feel overly cold or repetitive. The project also demonstrated that a strong design does not always depend on an excessive budget. Through clear prioritisation, close collaboration and careful management of resources, we were able to focus the investment on the areas that mattered most. The final home reflects S &amp; A’s original vision: raw yet refined, minimal yet personal. More importantly, it shows how thoughtful project management and attention to detail can turn a clear concept into a practical and liveable space. The homeowner opt in for no floorings and an open concept kitchen. However, the peculiar thing about this layout is that the kitchen still feels enclosed. A wall is blocking from the side and there’s a water point behind it. It will look half-hearted and as though the works are not planned well. Therefore, we decided to knock down the small wall and repipe the water to the opposite side. The only disadvantage is that the kitchen storage space is limited. The homeowner isn’t disheartened, instead he found ways to resolve the constraints. He purchased standing dish racks and small metal drawers to hide behind the fridge. He read up online to search for easy maintenance plants. Those that can survive in low light conditions and doesn’t wither very easily. Staying at the ground level gives the homeowner an opportunity to have his own mini garden. It started from a single leaf and now it has grew and multiplied to 3.&nbsp; Big Foot vinyl The vinyl were personally purchased and installed by the homeowner. Big Foot is made in Korea, it is eco-friendly and made from non-toxic plasticiser. Overall, the selected maple color is on point and it is comfortable to walk on. He wanted a peranakan + modern home as it reminds of his childhood. His parents also stayed at the ground floor where he has friends frequently visits for a game of soccer. “It isn’t about me but the society that we lived in, these are my favourite memories and I believed my wife agrees on that.”&nbsp; We chose for grey floor tiles and black finishes fittings for its versatility. The homeowner is kinda mysterious, so it added as a bonus to his personality. She shared about her furnitures and decoratives historical origins. Mostly dated back to the old China dynasty, the homeowner’s husband is a collector. He has antiques; ie emperor’s robe, old chinese cabinets and old wall lamps.&nbsp; The homeowner decided to “live better”, to steer away from the old designs, she wanted to declutter the home and modernise certain aspects of the home. We planned to include more of western’s stylings to diffuse the heavy oriental ornaments. She added that she loves the idea of a tropical look, giving sort of a character to the home. We chose a large tile feature based a tropical look; I was so intrigued by the looks and felt that we certainly made a right decision. We accompanied that feature tile with grey concrete look so that the bathroom doesn’t look too busy. Here’s how it turned out! However, homeowner backed out with the initial plan. It was decided to move into a heavy graphical look. The selection steered away from the tropical idea and dived into heavy repetitions. The tiles selected mostly are pattern tiles, feels almost like a turkish bathouse. Note that there are other designs principles that we can play on; Symmetry, contrast, negative spaces are examples we can work on. Relying too much on repetition will produce a heavy graphical look. With repetitions, decorative elements, the space will look cluttered and tight. It only feels new because there are new furnitures and fittings installed. The home still feels cluttered. Small spaces such as the yard now feels even smaller with the new tabletop protruding outwards. I hope I’m able to reccommend homeowners better in future. Minimal materials selection doesn’t mean weak design. We found a supplier who does mural decal on glass. The decal was printed and cut out based on my design. So we had this tropical leaves in bronze color. Not only the mirror was used as a reflection, the decal acts like a backdrop to the area. As we installed a downlight right above the decal, it projects shadows to the surrounding walls. Being in a tightly knitted space, that walkway corridor feels like an immersive walkthrough. Somewhat like you experience from retail interiors.At that moment I was like “woah.. I could actualy do this..” I hope I’ll be given more opportunities to experiment on this. The location is famous of its food; 2 Chefs started in a small corner and now it is famous for the tze char, my favourites are the butter pork ribs &amp; ginseng chicken. Eng Kee chicken wing is another hawker stall that has long queues during lunch hours.&nbsp; Homeowner shared with me that the apartment was brought down from her grandmother, therefore the space has much sentimental value to her. As a young girl, she often meet up with her grandma and hang around in the estate. She can easily identify the estate’s best coffee or tastiest sliced fish soup.&nbsp; Moving into the unit, G.L hoped for a newly renovated look but still able to retain certain memories of the space. Looking at the unit, we found two distinct materials that can be identified easily from her grandma’s. Firstly, the terrazzo flooring are too precious to be hacked away and replaced, it may look dirty but it is still able to be grind and polished. The colors has to suit the terrazzos colors, and it shouldnt be too loud. We decided to go for EDL’s matcha, it has a soothing vibe, feels almost naturalistic.&nbsp; On the other hand, the kitchen requires a careful plan on its layout and configuration. It is a small space to include the laundry area. We needed to fit in a washing machine, dryer and hanging clothes rack. As floorplan are not always drawn to the exact scale, the space will differs slightly larger or smaller. Therefore it is difficult to gauge without going down to site for actual measurements. Below shows the renders based on the floorplan’s measurement. The paintings are done on two coats. The image below shows the first coat. More importantly look at how the terrazzos shine after polished! It looks as clean as new. The only thing is that the skirting can’t be polished. The huge polishing machine aren’t able to clamp down the sides to grind and polish.
