Celebrating Found Objects

Celebrating Found Objects is an upcycling assignment to give new meaning to scrapped objects. The task was to design a product that tells a story about Pasir Ris, a town loacated in the east of Singapore.

Partner: Claudius Kheng Instagram @claudiusashimself,

We traveled on bicycle to explore Pasir Ris. We rode past the Sampan Playground, Farmway and Loyang.

These are the few interesting facts about the town that we gathered

1. The Paris Ris Interchange is SAF’s assembly point before heading out to Tekong camp.

2. There is a hidden Sampan playground.

3. Compared to other towns in Singapore, there are less infrastructures and more trees in Pasir ris

4. There are establishments such as the PCN Kiosk, Parking Racks and Bicycle Lanes to encourage cycling.

5. Jetty and fishing spots along the beach.

Cycling at Pasir Ris park gave us the inspiration for The Fading Lamp.

The Fading Lamp is a sculpture to share our experience at Pasir Ris. The wheel represents its cycling culture and the wood planks symbolises its nature reserves.

The base holds the weight of the frame, it allows the wheel to rotate freely within the range of a 90 degrees angle. A dynamo is connected to the wheel and wired to a light bulb. In other words, in theory, if the wheel rotates, the lightbulb will light up.

The product can be used as a display piece in many homes that encourages interaction. When the user interacts by spinning the wheel, a light will emitted. The idea was to express our love for the environment, to cherish what nature has given us. Hence, The Fading Lamp was titled as our sculpture and we hope it serves as a reminder to the people, to protect earth and work towards a sustainable world.

The Fading Lamp was exhibited at Naiise's flagship store at The Grand Cathay during the month of Nov- Dec in 2016 and moved to the National Design Centre on Jan - Feb in 2017.
